SERVICE STATION GLENFERRIE ROAD HAWTHORN
A brief history of 567-569 Glenferrie road
• Aboriginal people hunted and foraged in this area for thousands of years
• The area was used briefly for farm land in the middle part of the nineteenth century.
• In the late nineteenth century the area was subdivided and a house was constructed using Hawthorn Bricks.
• In the middle of the twentieth century the house was converted into a service station original sections of hawthorn Brick remain visible.
• Pedders Suspension business was run on this site until the property was sold to
• Nordlaw Industries Pty Ltd who are now Constructing a four storey building with thirty-five dwellings on this site They have dug an enormous hole and are removing all traces of past occupation from the site.
The history of this site provides an accurate picture of the changes to the area that have occurred over time. The large number of units and flats that have been constructed, are being constructed or are planned for the area will change the character of the area forever. I am not bemoaning the changes just commenting on them. Although I do believe that saint Joseph’s catholic primary school were silly not to purchase the property.
