Martin Place

Martin Place

9:30 hours Woke, showered and ate (1 slice of wholemeal bread, a banana and a cup of black tea).

10:00 hours: room service knocks, I open door a crack and look down to see the eyes of the housekeeper looking up at me. I smile and say that I am leaving in 5 minutes and close the door again.

10:15 depart the hotel

Circa 11:00 catch bus in glebe point road to Lawson’s auction rooms

The purpose of the visit being to collect items purchased by absentee bid the previous week.

Instead of being glamorous the place is just a large unattractive wharehouse

The woman at reception is on the phone and one of the storemen makes a comment about unhelpful behaviour. I pay and then head up stairs to the art department, I am greeted at the top of the stairs by a young man. Taking the invoice from me he rapidly retrieves my lot from a group of paintings resting against a wall. He begins to express his liking for the item I have purchased, but then stops suddenly in response to the grumpy disinterested look I have on my face.

12:00 hours take the bus back into the city

13:00 hours Purchase rubbish bags and brown packing tape, place pictures in plastic bag then seal bag with tape so to protect the picture fromthe rain.

13:00 hours I am Hungry so stop in at a café eat a coconut slice and a cup of coffee both were average in quality. I ask the cafe's the barista for the directions to circular quay, He smiles and provides them.

I walk up George Street Pausing to explore laneways and buildings.

Circular quay

14:30 hoursI caught a ferry to darling harbour and then stayed on board and returned to circular quay not bothering to disembark. Saw a family taking photographs and playing at luna park a man fishing and an old woman taking photographs as we passed by.

Disembarked and immediately boarded the Manley ferry

I sit at the bow of the ferry in the hot afternoon sun as a group of office workers drink alcohol in contravention of the ferry’s no alcohol rule. This appears to be something that they have done before as they make no attempt to hide what they are doing. Other workers sit quietly reading newspapers or starring into space and then there are the tourists such as me. One man takes photos of himself, other people take photographs of each other and I take photographs of them.

We arrive at manly and the workers disembark and the tourists who have spent the day in manly embark. I move to the upper deck and sit amongst a mixture of aging American tourists, glamorous young Italians and a smattering of other Europeans

We sail back to Sydney, the ferry heads straight into the blazing afternoon sun and this turns us all into silhouettes. I sit imaging that this is the apocalypse and that we are sailing towards the end of the world .

arrive back at circular quay

I Walk back through the city the sun is setting and I stop and photograph people in martin place. I walk on and find an underground station and take the train to central station and then catch a tram back to the hotel I eat smoked salmon wholemeal bread and have three glases of coke

I Sit at my computer and have the television running

21:30 make a phone call and go to sleep.
